Chamber welcomes extended UK airlinks
The Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce is heartened by the confirmation received from Easyjet that existing airlinks between Gibraltar and the UK will be maintained after the acquisition of GB Airways has been completed. The Chamber is saddened by the loss of a major local institution but wishes the new venture every success.
The Chamber is also pleased to note that British Airways has announced its intention to commence flights in its own right to and from Gatwick from April 2008. This is fundamental to the continued growth and development of the Finance Centre and the Shipping sector in providing international connections from London in addition to the point-to-point services currently provided by Monarch from Luton. We believe that these new services will give people living on the Rock, as well as in the Campo region, the benefits of increased choice and more competitive prices.
Coupled with the news that the Gibraltar Government hopes to announce a reduced airport tariff structure before the end of 2007, the Chamber welcomes these three developments.
These announcements follow the recent disappointing news of the cutting and reduction of the Madrid routes by BA and Iberia respectively. The Chamber hopes that after completion of the new air terminal and associated link road, operators will reinstigate fuller services to Madrid and possibly to other destinations as well, but with more suitable flight schedules. A measured increase in air traffic should meet the goals of providing choice and flexibility for the passenger, a progressive reduction in landing fees whilst at the same time meeting environmental concerns.
Chamber President Nicholas Russo commenting on these recent developments said: “As Gibraltar’s economy continues to grow and become even more international, it is critical that our airlinks and associated infrastructure develop in tandem. We welcome all responsible operators providing services to and from Gibraltar and believe that these announcements highlight the increased level of confidence being shown in Gibraltar’s future economic development.”
