The Chamber welcomes the creation of a shuttle bus service to take visitors to the Upper Rock. Now that the cable car will be out of action for the next two years it is important that Gibraltar offers additional ways to transport visitors to Gibraltar’s most popular tourist site.
The new London taxis are also welcome and will probably be very popular with tourists and locals alike. They also reinforce Gibraltar’s British identity at a time when many fear that the treaty will dilute this.
The Chamber hopes this is the first step of further investments in the bus and transport network as a whole. A hop-on/hop-off service to all points around town and around the Rock would make a positive difference. Additionally, with more cruise calls this year, a free shuttle service from the cruise terminal into town, as seen in many other ports, would be welcome by the Chamber’s members so that they may benefit from this increase in visitors.
The Chamber also calls for the improvement and beautification of the points of entry into Gibraltar. It may be a little premature to deal with smartening up the frontier area, but once the treaty comes into full effect this location should be a priority. Not just a clean-up, but with clear signage and useful tourism information for all visitors to create a sense that visitors are entering a unique place in the world. The Chamber would be encouraged by the publication of the plans of what the Government has in mind.
Many of these improvements were proposed in the Chamber’s Tourism Manifesto published a few years ago, so the Chamber has no hesitation in supporting these enhancements in our tourist infrastructure as it will help to make Gibraltar even more attractive to visitors as a quality destination.
